People can learn a lot from dogs. Our ever vigilant Jackie, who is a rat terrier and Jack Russell mix, let us know that we had a squatter on the property. We have a drainage swale next to our house which has become a place for the wildlife to congregate. I welcome the other creatures but I draw the line on rats and mice. A rat has homesteaded in our backyard under one of our raised vegetable garden beds. Jackie was bred to take care of such rodents and she has been digging by the rat hole trying to get to it. She digs on the ground and jumps into the vegetable bed and starts digging that way too. Fortunate for us that part of the bed isn’t being used right now. Jackie doesn’t give up. She wants to be let out several times an hour just to see if that rat is about. She patrols the yard and jumps into the vegetable garden and sniffs around. It is so extremely hot outside that I worry about her and keep calling her inside to cool off. Yes, we are getting rat poison to do the job because I really don’t want Jackie in a rat fight. Ugh.
What my wonderful dog reminds me is that when you want a job to get done, you stay with it. Jackie has extreme focus. Nothing is going to stop her from going after her rat. Well, shouldn’t we be the same way about bringing out creations into the world, achieving our dreams, building a good life? Stay focused and don’t let anything get in your way.
